Smokey Robinson
Smokey Robinson was born in 1940 in Detroit Michigan. He met Barry Gordy in the 1950's, just after forming his famous group "The Miracles". Robinson pushed Gordy into asking his father for the $800 loan to start Motown Records. Robinson served as the Vice President of Motown until its sail in 1988. He served as a performer, songwriter, talent scout, and mentor for Motown throughout his career. He is credited for over 4000 songs, including 37 of Motown's 40 #1 Hits.
Smokey Robinson had been nicknamed "The King of Motown" due to the fact that he worked behind the scenes of Motown to better its productions, and he also served as a performer. In the 60's, Robinson performed and recorded in a group known as "The Miracles". They became one of Motown's most well known groups, and produced many of its hits, including "My Girl", Motown's first #1 Hit
In 1972, Robinson took on his solo career. In the past with the temptations, the majority of his songs contained lyrics regarding romance, but when he went solo, he created more of a mellow sound. This was in part due to the fact of Robinson's battle against drug addiction in the 1980's, but eventually recovered, and openly spoke about his recovery in his autobiography. Robinson went on to win grammy awards as a solo artist in 1987.
He is still alive and performing today. He also is a public speaker, speaking to audiences about his personal experiences regarding his faith.
